If emotions sometimes confuse you – you’re not alone. (And confusion itself is an emotion, so that just makes it more complicated!) On the whole as a society, we haven’t really understood emotions and so it’s no surprise if you can’t remember ever learning about what they are, what they mean, or how to handle them.
Thankfully, this has started to change.
Every year there is more information from the scientific research community that brings us closer to a full picture of what emotions are and how they work. As with most new frontiers in the science world, there is a lot of debate and as new things are discovered, old ideas are overturned. If you want to learn more about the nitty gritty science of things, you can start with some of the many published works of researchers like Antonio Damasio or Lisa Feldman Barrett.
If you’re not a science person, that’s okay too. You don’t need to understand chemistry to boil water and cook pasta. And you don’t need to understand neurology to work with your emotions.
Karla McLaren, M.Ed, has developed a framework of emotions that can help you transform what emotions mean to you in your everyday life. Dynamic Emotional Integration® (DEI) is the key to unlocking the wisdom of your emotional realm. As a licensed DEI Trainer and Consultant, I can be your guide through this process – I invite you to take the first step on this journey with me.
There’s one easy first step that anyone can take … by answering the question:
What are you feeling?
If you can name the emotions you feel, they become easier to work with. That simple act of giving a name to your emotions will already begin to change your relationship with them. And the bonus is that the more words you have for all the different types and levels of emotion you feel, the easier it gets even still. Need some help with this first step? Here is a free emotional vocabulary list to get you started. I encourage you to add or edit this list so that it works best for you.
But that’s just the first step in the life-changing discovery of the wisdom within your emotions. I’d love to help you continue the adventure.
